More about this artwork

Frances Hodgkins’ painting, "Two Plates" (circa 1931), showcases the artist’s distinctive watercolor style that beautifully melds abstraction with the delicate intricacies of still life. The artwork features two intricately drawn plates, each depicting a small narrative scene. The plate on the left illustrates a tranquil rural setting, likely a vignette of farm life with figures amid organic forms that resemble crops or trees. The right plate shows an urban scene, possibly craftspeople or artists at work, emphasizing Hodgkins' interest in human activities and their environments.Adding depth and intrigue to the composition, a draped fabric sways above the plates, rendered in a dream-like wash of blues and neutrals, echoing the subtle hues of the landscape in the background. Two vividly blue, eye-like embellishments on a jug placed centrally behind the plates give a touch of surrealism, complementing the overall ethereal and softly layered aesthetic of the piece. This painting provides a glimpse into Hodgkins' masterful ability to blend realism with abstraction, using a palette that enhances the fantastical, almost whimsical quality of everyday objects.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
