More about this artwork

Leo Gestel's "Woman's Head and Face" is a compelling example of modernist drawing that showcases the artist's innovative style and emotional depth. In this artwork, the sketching is loose and somewhat abstract, emphasizing form and expression over strict representation. The face appears fragmented and reassembled, playing with perspective and anatomical alignment in ways that distort yet highlight the features. The woman’s face in the painting is constructed with sweeping, confident lines that suggest movement and fluidity. Details such as the eyes, nose, and mouth are depicted with varying degrees of emphasis, while extra lines and shading add texture and dimension to the face. The angle and stylization of the features contribute to a sense of introspection or contemplation.Notably, the layered features convey a deeper psychological complexity, indicating perhaps a dual perspective or the multifaceted nature of human identity. The hat atop the head adds a fashionable element typical of Gestel's era, grounding the work in the time's cultural context.Overall, this piece is indicative of Gestel's fascination with experimentation in form and his ability to capture emotional resonance through unconventional portrayal of human features.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
