More about this artwork

This beautiful artwork by Leo Gestel is quite intricate and imaginative, showcasing a collection of symbols and figures arranged in a series of vignettes. It's rendered in what appears to be pencil or charcoal, giving it a soft, ethereal texture which complements the mythical and emblematic subject matter.Starting from the left, there's a sketch of Pegasus, the mythical winged horse from Greek mythology. Pegasus is captured in mid-rearing form, with wings elegantly spread and its body dynamically posed, suggesting movement and power. The flames around it could symbolize divinity or a celestial origin.Next, we see an image of a dove in flight, its wings beautifully detailed and wide open. Doves are commonly associated with peace and purity, and this dove, with its graceful form, appears as if it is soaring through the clouds. The central top sketch features a heraldic emblem, which is an art form used typically in heraldry to represent family lineage, profession, or association. Here, it contains a mirror-like circle surrounded by floral motifs and foliage, encapsulating what appears to be a horse or similar creature, tying in perhaps with the motif of Pegasus shown earlier. To the far right, we see a hand delicately holding a rose, an image rich in symbolism. Roses often represent love, beauty, and passion.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
