More about this artwork

The painting titled "Rearing Horse" by Leo Gestel is a compelling example of expressionist art, captured primarily through bold, black brush strokes against a stark white background. The artwork depicts a horse in a dynamic and powerful pose, rearing up on its hind legs. The strokes are fluid yet intense, conveying both the physical power and the spirited nature of the horse.Gestel's technique emphasizes movement and emotion rather than detailed realism. His use of a limited palette and the abstract quality of the strokes create a sense of immediacy and vitality. There's a certain drama in the contrast between the deeply black ink and the plain background, highlighting the horse's form and the dramatic action of rearing. The image manages to capture a moment that feels both wild and graceful, encapsulating a spirited animal in a simple yet evocative composition. This energy and motion are characteristic themes often explored by Gestel, showcasing his skill in using minimalism to convey complex emotional and dynamic scenes.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
