In this tranquil composition, Lhermitte conveys the peaceful close of a day, where nature and humankind exist in harmonious serenity. The painting portrays a serene river landscape at sunset. The gentle glow of the dying sun bathes the scene in soft, warm light, highlighting the fading colors of the sky and the lush, verdant surroundings. In the foreground, a fisherman, immersed in his quiet pursuit, symbolizes a timeless connection to nature. He sits by the water's edge, his focus and stillness mirroring the calm waters before him. Nearby, a woman rests on a wooden fence, possibly reflecting on the day's end or simply enjoying the beauty of the moment.Across the river, the viewer's eye is drawn to a picturesque village. Small houses dot the landscape, their reflections shimmering in the water, suggesting a close-knit community living in tune with its natural environment.
