More about this artwork

This artwork titled "Beeld Van Een Leeuw" by Leo Gestel depicts a stylized drawing of what appears to be a sculptural lion-like figure. The lion is presented with a highly textured surface, which could indicate either ornamental detailing on the original sculpture or might be a representation of dense, layered fur, depending on the artist's interpretation. The expression on the lion's face is somewhat animated and caricatured, with rounded, bulging eyes and a broad mouth. The figure is shown seated and appears to be on a plinth or base, which suggests it's a depiction of a statue rather than a living animal. The overall style of the drawing is quite meticulous, with a heavy use of dense, dark lines that create both shadow and texture throughout the image. On the right-hand side above the figure, you can see some handwritten notes possibly indicating the dimensions or notes related to the artwork's production ("Circa hoog 11 cm" suggests an approximate height of the object being 11 cm). Below that, additional scribbles seem to relate to the artistic process or categorizations, perhaps directions or tags used by the artist or in the storage/archiving of this particular piece. The piece commands attention with its bold graphic quality, and the use of black ink on a stark white background emphasizes the figure's dramatic and enigmatic presence. This drawing could be Gestel exploring form and texture, or perhaps it was preparatory work for a larger project.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
