More about this artwork

The painting titled "Vintage Christmas" by Edward Penfield depicts two women dressed in early 20th-century winter clothing against a stark, wintery backdrop. The woman on the left is elegantly dressed in a long brown coat and a stylish hat adorned with a wide brim. She carries a large bunch of holly, which is beautifully green with red berries, symbolizing the Christmas season. The woman on the right, possibly younger, wears a thick coat and a scarf with a darker, simple hat, and is carrying a wicker basket.Their attire and the items they carry suggest they might be preparing for a festive celebration. The setting appears to be a chilly, snow-covered landscape, with hints of a distant town or village in the background. The overall use of color is muted, with bursts of green and red from the holly providing a vibrant contrast, evoking the traditional colors associated with Christmas. This artwork by Penfield, with its clear lines and block coloring, reflects his distinctive style often seen in his poster art. The scene quietly captures a moment of holiday preparation, emphasizing themes of warmth and communal preparation in a season typically associated with generosity and gathering.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
