More about this artwork

This painting by Pierre Bonnard is a vibrant and inviting depiction of urban life that seems to depict a busy city scene, likely in Paris given the series' title. The scene centers around a pushcart, which is illustrated with a sense of immediacy and movement. The cart is loaded with what appears to be fruits, suggesting perhaps a market setting. The composition features a large foreground figure interacting with the cart, adding a personal element to the depiction of street life. This figure, possibly the vendor, is clad in an apron, indicating his role.In the background, the city life bustles with activity; there are small, lightly sketched figures that offer a sense of depth and movement. These figures are contrasted against more vivid, larger-scale elements like the red awnings, which not only add a pop of color but also help to create a visual balance between the foreground and background activities. The atmosphere of the scene is captured through Bonnard’s use of light, soft colors which highlight the everyday vibrancy of Parisian life. The painting exudes a lively, yet ordinary day in the city, encapsulating the essence of local urban life through a slice-of-life glimpse provided by the artist’s perspective.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
