More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Danseurs," a captivating work by Pierre Bonnard, created between 1909 and 1912. This painting vividly encapsulates the lively, dynamic spirit of dance with its vibrant brushwork and effusive use of color. The canvas depicts two dancers mid-performance, each figure portrayed with a unique, expressive gesture that conveys movement and energy. On the left, a dancer wearing a vivacious red and blue costume with a flamboyant, feathered hat stretches in a dynamic pose, likely in the midst of a swirling dance step. Her garment, rich in color and embellished with what seems to be sparkling sequins and beads, falls beautifully, mirroring the rhythm of her dance. The intense colors and bold strokes give this figure a sense of vibrancy and kinetic energy. To the right stands another dancer, characterized by a more subdued palette of silvery blues and greys but no less lively. This figure holds their arms aloft, and their costume, simplified yet elegant with a flamboyant rosette, complements the theatrical posturing. The use of lighter, almost incomplete strokes suggests motion, adding to the painting's overall dynamism. In the background, undefined forms and splashes of color suggest an audience or perhaps other elements of a theatrical setting, further emphasizing the theme of performance and spectacle."Danseurs" by Pierre Bonnard is more than a depiction of dancers; it is a celebration of movement, rhythm, and the joyous expressivity of the human form.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
