More about this artwork

"Evening Under the Lamps" (La Soirée sous les lampes), painted by Pierre Bonnard around 1903, beautifully captures a cozy, intimate domestic scene. This painting illustrates Bonnard’s exceptional ability to use light and color to evoke a mood and tell a story without the need for precise detail. The scene is set in a warmly lit interior, possibly a family’s dining room, enveloped by rich crimson drapes that frame the room and imbue it with a sense of warmth and privacy. At the heart of the painting, a lamp casts a gentle illumination on a group composed predominantly of women and children seated around a table. These figures, rendered with soft, fluid brushstrokes, contribute to the overall feeling of relaxation and evening tranquility. A soft lamp light gently touches each of their faces, highlighting their quietly engaging activities; one figure looks as if she might be reading, while the others could be involved in a quiet conversation or contemplating the night.Decorative elements like the patterned wallpaper and the detailed frame of a mirror add to the richness of the room, suggesting a comfortable, lived-in space filled with personal touches. Through the window pane, hints of the darkening sky juxtapose the warmth inside, emphasizing the enclosure and protection of this familial setting. This masterpiece exemplifies Bonnard's artistry in creating scenes that pull the viewer into a moment of lived experience, reflecting his continuous interest in the interaction of light, color, and daily life.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
