More about this artwork

Step into the idyllic realm of Pierre Bonnard's "Bord de Mer, Sous les Pins" (Seaside, Under the Pines), a stunning masterpiece painted in 1921 that immerses viewers in the tranquil essence of coastal leisure. This vibrant composition captures a moment of serene intimacy set against a captivating landscape. In the foreground, we are welcomed by an engaging scene featuring two figures enjoying each other's company. One, wrapped in a warm red shawl, sits beneath an umbrella alongside another whose face is shaded by an elegant white hat. Their relaxed posture and the casual spread of books and a basket on a picnic blanket suggest a day spent in leisurely pursuits, disconnected from the rush of everyday life.Bonnard's distinctive touch is evident in the vivid colors and dynamic brushstrokes that bring the surrounding nature to life. The blue of the sea merges seamlessly with the sky, punctuated only by distant mountains that draw the eye across the panoramic view. The vertical lines of the pine trees frame the scene, their bark marked with dashes of pink and white that mirror the playful lightness of Bonnard's palette. To the right, a child — rendered with gentle strokes — approaches, adding a sense of movement and curiosity."Bord de Mer, Sous les Pins" is not just a visual representation; it's an invitation to experience the soothing rhythms of nature and human connection.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
