More about this artwork

"Watcher Got" (1906) by Udo Keppler is a vibrant and intriguing piece that offers a satirical commentary on the political and economic issues of its time. In this illustration, we see caricatures of three men around a table, immersed in what appears to be a dubious financial exchange or negotiation. The characters are depicted with exaggerated, almost grotesque features, with names such as Peabody and Orr inscribed on their hats, likely referencing real individuals or figures relevant to the era's political or economic landscape. The man labeled "Peabody" looks intently at another character, "Orr," who is scrutinizing a piece of paper labeled "Proxies," symbolizing power of attorney or control over others' votes or rights, commonly used in corporate environments. The melee of coins and banknotes on the table suggests a scene of corruption or manipulation, with one character, unseen in the name but evident in action, aiming a revolver at the assets piled on the table, adding a sense of tension and urgency. This painting uses bold colors and dynamic composition to draw the viewer's eye across the scene, reflecting Keppler's style of embedding critique and humor in his works. Keppler, known for his contributions to Puck Magazine, a publication famed for its political cartoons, adeptly uses his art to challenge the viewer, provoke thought, and reflect on the societal issues of his time.
