More about this artwork

William Bouguereau's painting "Girl with a Pomegranate" from 1875 is a captivating example of the French artist's mastery in depicting the delicate beauty and serene grace of his subjects. In this exquisite work, Bouguereau portrays a young girl holding a pomegranate, a fruit often associated with symbols of life and fertility in art history. Her gaze, both pensive and direct, engages the viewer, adding to the painting's enigmatic quality. The girl is adorned in a richly colored and textured headscarf, draped elegantly over her head and shoulders. The scarf, featuring stripes of yellow, purple, and green, contrasts beautifully with her plain, cream-colored blouse and dark, ornate vest, highlighting the craftsmanship and attention to detail that Bouguereau is known for. The subtle interplay of light on her face and attire gives the painting a lifelike and almost photographic realism. Her expression, combined with the intricate execution of her garments and the symbolic pomegranate, creates a portrait that is not only visually striking but also rich in symbolic depth. This painting is a testament to Bouguereau's skill at capturing both the beauty of his subjects and the cultural symbolism imbued within everyday objects.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
