More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Paysage Italien," a remarkable painting by the distinguished artist, Odilon Redon. Created in 1893, this piece beautifully exemplifies Redon's transition into using vibrant colors, which marked a significant deviation from his earlier, more somber charcoal works. The painting reveals a vivid Italian landscape, where Redon’s unique brushwork and color palette beckon viewers into a serene, almost dreamlike vista overlooking a bustling harbor. The foreground is dominated by shadowy earth tones that suggest rocky terrains, contrasting sharply with the luminous horizon. This play of colors skillfully directs attention across the bay towards a distant cityscape bathed in warm hues of orange and red, possibly capturing the glow of a setting sun.In the sky, Redon employs strokes of soft blue and bold orange, conveying the fleeting moments of twilight. The water mirrors this dance of colors with subtle reflections that hint at calmness despite the presence of moored boats rocking gently in the harbor."Paysage Italien" is not only a testament to Redon’s mastery of landscape painting but also an invitation to contemplate the serene and enchanting environments found in nature and our surroundings.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
