More about this artwork

Titled "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.05," this work by Georges Valmier showcases an intriguing ensemble of geometrical compositions, reflecting the artist's affinity for Cubism and abstract art. Created in 1930, the painting presents a four-part panel, each section teeming with a distinct arrangement of shapes and a unique, vibrant color scheme. In the top-left panel, we observe various geometric forms disrupting a beige backdrop. Tones of black, white, and blue dominate, infused with dashes of striped and solid patterns, creating a dynamic tension within the composition. The adjacent panel on the top right features a fascinating play of flowing, ribbon-like lines intertwined with patterned circles and checkerboard motifs, set against a blend of muted and soft hues.Moving to the lower-left panel, the artwork veers into a realm of purple and blue tones accompanied by green, adding an earthy contrast. This segment integrates squares, circles, and abstract lines that form a lively network. Lastly, the bottom-right panel introduces a bolder approach with its use of deep greens and rust colors, punctuated by white and orange circles, creating an optical allure.Valmier's work in "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.05" exemplifies his exploration of form and color, inviting viewers to interpret the intersections of abstract elements and the emotions they evoke.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
