More about this artwork

Explore the abstract artistry of Georges Valmier's "Reclining Woman," painted in 1924. This intriguing piece captures the essence of cubist influences, showcasing a woman enveloped in a cacophony of geometric shapes and vibrant colors that dissect and obscure the traditional human form. Valmier skillfully uses sharp angles mixed with curved forms, presenting a juxtaposition of colors and shapes that suggest depth and perspective, yet challenge the viewer's perceptions of space and form. The reclining figure is fragmented into an assortment of geometric patterns that mimic the curves and lines of the human body, integrated seamlessly with textile-like designs that add richness and complexity to the composition. This striking blend of abstract forms with a hint of figurative representation invites viewers to interpret the visible elements while pondering their relationship to the invisible.Valmier's innovative approach redefines the figure, transforming a simple subject into a complex interlace of design and color that speaks to the bold advancements of modernist art during the early 20th century. This painting not only reflects his mastery over the cubist style but also highlights his unique talent to evoke human presence through purely abstract means.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
