More about this artwork
The artwork titled "Coral" by Leo Gestel showcases a stark, monochrome rendering, seemingly inspired by the organic, intricate formations of coral reefs. Gestel uses fluid, dynamic lines to create a sense of depth and texture, mimicking the natural growth patterns of coral. The composition is dense and detailed, with various layers that suggest different heights and dimensions, adding to the artwork’s complexity. His use of black ink against a white background highlights the contrast and allows for the detailed patterns to stand out, emphasizing the natural beauty and uniqueness of coral structures. In essence, this painting captures the essence of the sea's depth and biodiversity through the artist's abstract and expressive style.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
