More about this artwork
This painting, "Drie Zwarte Paarden Staand Naar Links Kijkend" by Leo Gestel, beautifully captures three black horses. Gestel's use of stark, bold brushstrokes creates a sense of movement and emotion, enhancing the dynamic and expressive nature of the subjects. The horses are depicted with minimalistic yet impactful lines and forms, primarily in black on a white background, which starkly contrasts and emphasizes their form and presence. The positioning of the horses, all looking towards the left, gives a sense of unity and direction, possibly reflecting a moment captured in time where the horses are attentive to something outside of the viewer's perspective. Their postures and the varied expressiveness in their faces—one with its mouth open as if neighing—add to the liveliness and individuality of each horse.Gestel's artistic style here, likely influenced by elements of Expressionism and Cubism, focuses on simplified forms and emotional impact rather than detailed realism. This approach allows the viewer to engage imaginatively with the painting, filling in the blanks and feeling the vigor and spirited nature of these majestic animals. The minimalistic yet evocative depiction highlights Gestel’s ability to convey powerful narratives and emotions through abstract forms.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
