More about this artwork

This painting by Leo Gestel, titled "Three Horses," is an expressive and stylized representation of horses. The artist uses fluid, bold lines to outline the forms of three horses, emphasizing movement and emotion. The horses are captured in different stances, suggesting motion and interaction between them. The use of black and white adds to the simplicity and dynamism of the composition, drawing attention to the shapes and contours of the horses’ bodies. The varying thickness of lines achieved through this ink medium adds a textural richness and depth, making the horses appear lively and animated. The artistic style is indicative of Gestel's modernist approach, which often involved experimenting with form and abstraction. This artwork exemplifies his ability to convey energy and vitality through minimalistic yet impactful strokes, capturing the essence and spirit of the subjects rather than their detailed realistic portrayals.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
