More about this artwork
The painting "Twee Maskers Voor Gebouw En Rotsen" by Leo Gestel features two prominent masks, the largest of which dominates the foreground. This large mask seems serene and enigmatic, with soft, rounded features and a gentle expression. The eyes of the mask are closed, enhancing its tranquil and mysterious aura. The second, much smaller mask can be seen peeking from behind the first, adding depth and a slight touch of enigma to the scene. The masks are depicted in a bold, graphic style with stark black and white contrasts, typical of ink drawings. This high contrast imbues the image with a dramatic quality, emphasizing forms and expressions. The textures created by the ink strokes add vibrancy and a sense of movement to the composition. The background of the painting is less defined, suggesting an ambiguous space that could be interpreted as a rocky landscape or architectural elements. This ambiguity leaves much to the viewer's imagination regarding the setting.Leo Gestel's style in this work is expressive and modernist, focusing on form and emotion rather than detailed realism. The overall feeling is one of depth and introspection, inviting viewers to contemplate the significance of the masks and their setting. The year 1928 noted on the artwork places it in a period when Gestel was quite active in exploring different modernist styles, possibly reflecting influences ranging from Cubism to Expressionism.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
