More about this artwork
This painting by Leo Gestel titled "Elephant" is a minimalist and expressive portrayal of an elephant. The artist has used simple black lines on a white background to create the image. The use of lines is fluid and somewhat abstract, suggesting the texture and contours of the elephant’s body rather than detailing anatomical accuracy. The strokes vary in thickness, which add a dynamic and somewhat playful quality to the depiction. The pose of the elephant is static and side-profiled, giving it a calm and gentle presence. This approach captures the essence and simplicity of the animal in a stylized form, typical of Gestel's experimentation with modernist techniques.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
