More about this artwork
This artwork by Leo Gestel is an engaging watercolor painting that appears to be a celebratory piece, likely made in honor of the birth of Juliana Bellaar Spruyt. The image is rich in symbolic elements which are woven together in a dreamlike composition that captures the essence of joy and new beginnings. At the center of the painting, a large, stylized flower in soft pink tones dominates the scene, creating a delicate and nurturing atmosphere. Hovering above the flower is a white dove, universally recognized as a symbol of peace and innocence, which underscores the themes of purity and new life associated with the birth of a child.Beneath the arching form of the flower, there are three horses depicted—one black and two in shades of red. Horses can symbolize freedom, strength, and beauty, all positive attributes that one might wish for a newborn.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
