More about this artwork

This painting by Edvard Munch, titled "Woman by the Veranda Step" painted in 1942, exhibits a striking display of vivid color and emotion, characteristic of Munch's late works. The composition showcases a woman standing in the foreground, positioned slightly off-center. She appears contemplative or perhaps lost in thought, amid a dynamically painted environment. The color palette is intensely expressive, featuring bold reds, vibrant yellows, and soothing greens, which seem to blend into one another creating a swirling effect that heightens the feeling of motion and emotion within the scene. These vivid colors perhaps aim to capture the emotional state of the woman or reflect a particular moment of day - possibly sunset, hinted by the warmth of the colors. The background features a veranda with steps leading down to a garden or a similarly natural space. It appears Munch played with perspective and scale to emphasize the psychological state of the figure over realistic representation of the space. The sky is depicted in lighter, cooler colors, contrasting with the warmth of the rest of the scene and adding a layer of depth.Overall, the painting's brush strokes are loose and fluid, giving it a sense of immediacy and impulsiveness that is quite impactful. This style might suggest the expression of inner feelings and the introspective nature of the woman depicted, aligning with Munch's interest in expressing the deeper emotional reality rather than the external world.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
