More about this artwork
The painting titled "Clenched Fist" by Leo Gestel prominently features a dramatically rendered human fist. The fist is clenched tightly, suggesting a display of power, resistance, or possibly emotion. The style of the drawing is expressive, with hatch marks and lines that add a textured, dynamic quality to the image. The shading and intricate line work create a three-dimensional appearance, emphasizing the intensity and strength of the fist. The monochromatic scheme focuses the viewer’s attention entirely on the form and emotion conveyed through the gesture.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
