More about this artwork
The painting titled "Peace Dove" by Leo Gestel features a stylized, almost graphic representation of a dove in flight. The artwork is rendered in black lines on a simple background, giving it a bold and striking appearance. The dove, which is a universal symbol of peace, is depicted with its wings and tail spread wide, suggesting movement and freedom. One of the distinctive features of this artwork is the expressive detail in the dove's head and the radiating lines around it, which may symbolize radiance or aura, often associated with purity and peace. The date "11 Nov 1918" inscribed within the painting is significant as it marks the end of World War I—a day that is commemorated as Armistice Day. This context makes the dove even more symbolic, emphasizing hopes for peace after a turbulent period.Overall, Gestel’s minimalist yet expressive style captures the essence of peace and the collective yearning for an end to conflict, encapsulated through the powerful yet gentle imagery of the dove.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
