More about this artwork
This artwork by Auguste Rodin, titled "Hanako," is a fascinating and expressive sketch that captures the essence of its subject with a mix of abstract and figurative elements. The main focus of the piece is a detailed, almost haunting face of a woman depicted with nuanced shading and lines that add a deep sense of emotion and character. Here, Rodin uses delicate, semi-transparent layers of graphite or similar media, perhaps combined with washes of ink, to create a rich textural effect that highlights the facial features intensely. The woman's face is slightly tilted, her hands raised near her chin in a thoughtful or perhaps sorrowful pose, suggesting introspection or melancholy. This pose adds to the emotional depth of the drawing. To the right of this central figure, there is a more simplistic, almost ghost-like face that seems to hover disconnectedly. This face is drawn with fewer details and lighter strokes, providing a stark contrast to the intricacy and depth of the main figure. This secondary face may represent an alternate persona or a fleeting emotion, underscoring the complexity of the human spirit or the multiple layers of personality. The use of relatively empty space around the figures emphasizes their emotional state, possibly suggesting isolation or contemplation.

Rodin was born into a poor family. After earning a living through sculpting decorative stoneworks, he entered art school. He then applied a craftsman-like approach to his work and modeled the human body with the naturalism that latterly became his unique style. Considered as the founder of modern sculpture, Rodin's original works clashed with predominant figurative sculpture from traditional themes of mythology and allegory since he celebrated individual human physicality.
