More about this artwork
This painting by Auguste Rodin, titled "Two Reclining Nudes," features two figures portrayed with a sense of fluidity and spontaneity. The artwork is executed in watercolors and pencil, showcasing Rodin's mastery in using light and shade to define form.On the left, one of the nudes is depicted in a twisted, reclining pose, her head turned away, providing a sense of movement and a relaxed posture. The contour lines are soft and lightly sketched, creating an intimate and gentle expression of the human body. The figure on the right is rendered with a bit more definition, especially around the torso and legs. This figure is reclined in a dynamic pose that suggests strength and a stretch, with stronger, more confident strokes that convey the weight and solidity of the body. The use of watercolor adds a delicate, almost ethereal quality to the nude figures, while splashes of color, particularly the blue and brown hues, give vibrancy to the composition. These splatters and loose pigments on the paper might also signify Rodin's experimental approach to his artwork, allowing the medium to contribute naturally to the overall impression.Overall, this work of Rodin not only reflects his skills as a sculptor but also demonstrates his ability to capture the essence of human form and emotion through drawing, emphasizing the beauty found in natural, relaxed postures of the human body.

Rodin was born into a poor family. After earning a living through sculpting decorative stoneworks, he entered art school. He then applied a craftsman-like approach to his work and modeled the human body with the naturalism that latterly became his unique style. Considered as the founder of modern sculpture, Rodin's original works clashed with predominant figurative sculpture from traditional themes of mythology and allegory since he celebrated individual human physicality.
