More about this artwork
The painting by Christen Købke, titled "Captain Lieutenant Of The Navy D," is a detailed and expressively captured portrait of a naval officer from the 19th century. The officer stands confidently against a minimalistic background that gently draws attention to him without distraction. His dark navy uniform is detailed with meticulous care, emphasizing the texture of the fabric and the golden metallic sheen of the buttons and epaulettes, which signify his rank. The rich blue of the uniform is contrasted by the bright red of the collar and cuffs, adding a pop of color that highlights the officer's authoritative stance. The officer's facial expression is serious and contemplative, with sharp, focused eyes that seem to look directly at the viewer, creating a strong sense of engagement. His right hand loosely holds a sword by his side, further emphasizing his military status. The overall composition, combined with Købke's refined brushwork and nuanced use of lighting, captures a moment of solemn dignity and the proud bearing of a naval officer. This work is not only a portrait of an individual but also reflects the artist's skill in portraying the subtleties of human expression and the solemnity of military life in that era.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
