More about this artwork

The painting "Nude in Front of the Mirror" by Edvard Munch, dating from 1902, captures a haunting, introspective moment of solitary reflection. It portrays a naked woman standing with her back towards the viewer, facing a mirror. The angle and position suggest a private, unguarded moment, often unseen by others.Munch's use of color and brushwork in this painting enhances the sense of depth and emotion. The background and the figure are rendered with broad, loose strokes of yellows, greens, and hints of red, while the reflected image in the mirror appears somewhat muted and obscure, adding to the mysterious and introspective quality of the scene. This depiction aligns with Munch’s frequent exploration of complex psychological states and human vulnerabilities. The mirror in the artwork not only physically reflects the woman's image but also metaphorically reflects her inner self, possibly hinting at self-examination or contemplation of her own identity.Overall, this painting stands out as a deeply personal and psychologically charged work, typical of Munch's evocative style. It invites the viewer to ponder themes of self-awareness, the human psyche, and the nature of private moments.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
