More about this artwork

"Neutralia," a painting by Edvard Munch from 1915, is a vibrant, expressionist composition that draws the viewer into a dreamlike, almost mythic scene. Centered in the painting are two nude figures set within a lush, verdant landscape. The figures are rendered with fluid, undulating lines that accentuate their movement and the organic forms around them.On the right-hand side, a female figure is gracefully poised, delicately connected to the trunk of a blooming tree—perhaps suggestive of the tree of life or a symbol of nature's bounty. She seems to be in a state of rest or meditation, her hand gently touching the tree, highlighting a harmony between human and nature. To the left, a male figure stands more prominently, his body more boldly outlined against the backdrop of churning blue and white waves, which perhaps represent the sea or another natural body of water. This division in the painting between the tree and the water might symbolize a deeper theme of balance and unity between different elements of nature. The colors used in "Neutralia" are notably vibrant: the greens of the tree and grass contrast dynamically with the blues of the waves, while the pink flesh tones of the figures add a layer of warmth to the scene.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
