More about this artwork

"Redhaired Girl With White Rat" by Edvard Munch, painted in 1886, is a striking and evocative portrait. The painting depicts a young girl with red hair, deeply engrossed in observing or interacting with a white rat that she holds gently in her hands. The soft brush strokes and earthy, muted colors that Munch uses here create a tender scene that exudes warmth and curiosity. The girl is pictured standing next to a table, slightly leaning forward as she looks down at the rat. Her posture, along with the downcast eyes, suggests a moment of quiet contemplation or perhaps fascination with her small companion. This intimate human-animal interaction suggests themes of innocence, companionship, and perhaps also the exploration of nature and life's delicate forms. The environment around her is painted with less detail, focusing attention on her and her interaction with the rat. Her clothing, a blend of rustic shades, harmonizes with the background, putting further emphasis on her face and the white color of the rat, both of which draw the viewer’s eye as points of contrast. This work is reflective of Munch's ability to capture human emotion and the depth of simple, everyday moments. The painting invites the viewer to ponder the relationship between the girl and the rat, and the gentle handling of the rat shows a side of human interaction with nature that is filled with care and attentiveness.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
