More about this artwork

This pencil drawing portrays a full-length nude female figure, who holds a small, oval mirror in her right hand and an unidentified object in her left. The woman stands with her weight primarily on her right leg, while her left leg is slightly bent, adding a soft, relaxed pose. Her head is turned subtly to her left as she gazes into the mirror, and her facial expression suggests a moment of introspection or self-assessment.The artist, Edward Burne-Jones, is known for his Pre-Raphaelite style, which emphasizes detailed, precise lines and often explores themes of beauty and romanticism. Here, the delicate shading and fine linework highlight the contours of the female form and lend a gentle realism to the figure. Although the drawing has an overall ethereal quality, the realism of the human form is accentuated by the clear depiction of muscle tone and anatomy. The use of the mirror as a prop can be interpreted in a few ways: as a symbol of vanity, self-awareness, or perhaps the search for personal identity. This adds a layer of narrative depth, inviting viewers to ponder the subject's thoughts or feelings at this captured moment.Overall, the artwork is both technically proficient and evocative, typical of Burne-Jones' work, engaging the viewer both aesthetically and emotionally.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
