More about this artwork

Artist: Maxime MaufraOur latest exhibition features an evocative masterpiece by the French Post-impressionist painter Maxime Maufra, an artist renowned for his vibrant landscapes and seascapes. However, in the "Portrait du colonel La Villette," painted in 1911, Maufra explores the realm of portraiture with a compelling depiction of Colonel La Villette. This striking canvas captures the colonel in half-length, dressed formally in a black jacket, his face weathered and resolute. The colonel's imposing yet weary expression suggests a man of experience and strength, the warm yet muted tones of the background enfolding him in a soft, almost introspective light. Notable details, such as his patterned cap and the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor, hint at his military service and distinguishments without overwhelming the air of solemn dignity.Maufra's brushwork in this portrait is both bold and intimate, with thick applications of paint that emphasize the textured reality of the subject's rugged features and the tangible fabric of his attire. The blend of dark and warm colors creates a mood that is both somber and rich, reflecting perhaps the deep personal and historical narratives that the colonel carries with him.The "Portrait du colonel La Villette" not only showcases Maxime Maufra's versatility as an artist but also invites viewers to engage with a piece of history told through the lens of personal experience.
