More about this artwork

Henri Lebasque, lauded for his lively use of color and emotive compositions, masterfully captures the serene ambiance of the French countryside in his painting "Le moulin" (circa 1907). This sublime work, rendered in the Post-Impressionist style, depicts a serene riverscape, featuring an elegant, yet rustic mill building poised above the tranquil water. The painting is alive with the lush verdancy of nature, presenting trees in vigorous strokes of green and blue, their reflections in the water adding a dreamlike quality to the scene. The architectural structure of the mill, with its robust and somewhat asymmetrical form, draws the observer’s eye as it bridges the gentle flow of the river.Foregrounded is a small boat, possibly hinting at the presence of a silent observer or a momentarily absent villager. Above, the sky peeks through an arboreal canopy in soft shades of blue and white, suggesting the clear light of early day.Lebasque's brushwork imbues the painting with vigor and a palpable air of tranquility, inviting viewers into a moment suspended in time.
