More about this artwork

Maxime Maufra's enchanting pastel, "Côte rocheuse en Bretagne" (Rocky Coast in Brittany), painted between 1871 and 1918, offers viewers a vivid depiction of the rugged and untouched beauty characteristic of Brittany's coastline. In this artwork, Maufra captures the serene yet dynamic interplay between land and sea through his expert use of color and form. The painting features a foreground dominated by an expanse of lush green grass, meticulously highlighted with strokes of darker greens and subtle browns, suggesting the wild, wind-swept vegetation typical of the region. This leads the eye to the formidable rock formations that rise dramatically from the coastal edge. Maufra's skillful application of muted browns and grays not only reflects the solidity of these cliffs but also delicately contrasts with the vibrant blues and turquoises of the sea beyond. The ocean, rendered in lively brushstrokes, dances under the soft, luminous sky, conveying both the calmness and the perpetual motion of the waters that shape this rocky shore. The horizon line is faint yet discernible, a thin wash of blue slightly darker than the sky, providing a sense of depth and distance.Maufra’s selection of media, with the use of pastels allowing for both intensity and gentleness in color, reflects his ability to blend realism with a touch of the poetic. "Côte rocheuse en Bretagne" not only showcases his technical prowess but also embodies his deep appreciation for the natural landscapes of Brittany, which he revisited throughout his career.
