More about this artwork

"Vichy At Night" by Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin captures a vibrant, bustling street scene, illuminated under the gentle embrace of nightfall. This evocative painting delves into the luminous heart of Vichy, a town renowned for its thermal springs, around the turn of the 20th century. Korovin's mastery in portraying light and shadow plays a significant role in bringing this nocturnal tableau to life.In the foreground, a lively street dips into the composition, drawing our eyes into the scene. The gentle yet deliberate strokes depict people navigating the thoroughfare, some alone, others in pairs, contributing to the painting's dynamic atmosphere. Festooned banners stretch across the street, suggesting a festive or special event, their bright colors popping against the darker tones of the evening sky.Buildings line the street, their facades glowing warmly from the lights within, juxtaposed against the cool blue-black of the night. The varied brushstrokes create a texture that mimics the vibrant, almost palpable buzz of a town alive at night. Korovin’s use of impasto enhances the three-dimensional effect, making the scene leap from the canvas with immediacy and energy. This painting not only invites viewers to experience a slice of Vichy's nightlife but also showcases Korovin's exceptional ability to capture the spirit of a place through his vivid color palette and spirited brushwork.

Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin was a leading Russian Impressionist painter.

Konstantin was born in Moscow to a merchant family officially registered as "peasants of Vladimir Gubernia". His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, earned a university degree and was more interested in arts and music than in the family business established by Konstantin's grandfather.
