More about this artwork

We are thrilled to present an enthralling work of art by the Flemish master, Peter Paul Rubens: "The Last Communion of Saint Francis of Assisi," created in 1619. This painting is an exquisite example of Rubens' mastery in capturing emotion and divine atmosphere in his religious compositions. In this compelling depiction, we observe Saint Francis of Assisi receiving his final rite of Holy Communion. The scene is overflowing with a dramatic intensity and a palpable emotional depth typical of Rubens' works. At the center, Saint Francis is supported by fellow friars, his frail body a stark representation of his devotion and penance. Above, an angel floats, suggesting the imminent passage of Francis' soul to the divine.Rubens' use of lighting accentuates the saint’s ethereal state and the sanctified elements of the composition. The figures surrounding Francis show a range of responses, from devout worship to profound sorrow, illustrating the impact of the saint's final moments on his followers. The architectural and drapery elements are rendered with Rubens’ characteristic vigor, framing this sacred event with both grandeur and intimacy. This painting not only showcases Rubens’ artistic prowess but also invites viewers to reflect on themes of faith, mortality, and the eternal.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
