More about this artwork

Delve into the captivating world of Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin with the evocative painting, "Roses on a Window Sill, Gurzuf," crafted in 1917. This enchanting piece transports viewers to the quaint and scenic setting of Gurzuf, a remarkable resort on the Crimean Peninsula, celebrated for its inspiring landscapes and serene beauty. The painting beautifully captures a vibrantly colored bouquet of roses, arrayed in a deep, lush variety ranging from bold crimsons to delicate whites, with their leaves adding refreshing shades of green. These roses are positioned on a window sill, suggesting a scene of domestic tranquility and natural beauty intruding gently into the personal space. The background opens onto a twilight scene, depicting the sleepy coastal town of Gurzuf under a starlit sky, with hints of illuminated windows suggesting life beyond the immediate serenity of the floral foreground. The moon casts a subtle light, adding mystique and depth to the nocturnal palette.Korovin's mastery in using thick, expressive brushstrokes creates a lively texture that makes the roses almost tangible. The distinct contrasts between the vibrant flowers and the muted, moody backdrop emphasize not just a visual depth but also an emotional one, bridging the interior life with the expansive world outside."Roses on a Window Sill, Gurzuf" is not merely a painting; it is a window into a moment of timeless beauty and a testament to Korovin’s enduring love for merging natural landscapes with human elements.

Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin was a leading Russian Impressionist painter.

Konstantin was born in Moscow to a merchant family officially registered as "peasants of Vladimir Gubernia". His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, earned a university degree and was more interested in arts and music than in the family business established by Konstantin's grandfather.
