More about this artwork

This enchanting painting, "Assemblée dans un parc," crafted by the illustrious French artist Jean-Baptiste Pater, offers a picturesque glimpse into the leisurely pastimes of the 18th century French aristocracy. Created during the period from 1715 to 1736, this artwork showcases Pater's mastery in capturing the playful and romantic essence typical of the Rococo style. The scene is set in a lush, verdant park, under the canopy of sprawling trees and beside classical architectural elements, possibly ruins, which add a touch of the romantic to the landscape. The painter’s use of light and soft brushstrokes creates an ethereal atmosphere that seems almost out of a dream. At the heart of the composition is a gathering of elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen. The women, adorned in flowing gowns and holding delicate fans, engage in conversation, flirtation, and some appear to be involved in music making, signifying the era's fondness for arts and culture. Amongst them, one lady stands slightly apart, a figure of graceful poise in a shimmering blue dress, catching the viewer’s eye with her gentle demeanor. The men, dressed in customary coats and breeches, participate with equal enthusiasm, some sitting and others slightly reclined, enjoying the music or engaging the ladies in light conversation. The presence of playful children and a dog further enriches the scene, adding a lively and familial atmosphere. To the right, the park extends into a serene landscape, with a distant spire suggesting a village or perhaps a church, contributing to the overall narrative of a peaceful retreat from the urban life of Paris.

Jean-Baptiste Pater was a French rococo painter.

Born in Valenciennes, Pater was the son of sculptor Antoine Pater and studied under him before becoming a student of painter Jean-Baptiste Guide. Pater then moved to Paris, briefly becoming a pupil of Antoine Watteau in 1713. Watteau, despite treating Pater badly, had a significant influence on him. However the two quarreled and Pater returned to Valenciennes, where he remained for two years. In 1721, Pater and the dying Watteau reconciled; subsequently Pater became a student of Watteau once again, although only for a month before the latter's death. Pater later claimed to have learnt everything he knew during those few weeks with Watteau. He was accepted into the Académie in 1728, presenting a large military work in the popular Watteau style: La Rejouissance des Soldats (Louvre).
