More about this artwork

This enchanting painting, "A Sea-Nymph" by Edward Burne-Jones, captures the mythical grace of a sea nymph, a creature from classical mythology commonly associated with the sea and known for her beauty and seductive allure. The nymph is depicted with a fish-like lower body, merging human and marine elements typical of such mythological beings. In the painting, the nymph's upper body rises gracefully from the undulating, deep blue waves, her skin luminously pale against the vibrant sea. Her long, flowing red hair billows around her head, mimicking the movement of the water and enhancing her ethereal presence. She holds a large, silvery fish in one hand while gently cradling a reddish-brown crab in the other, illustrating her harmony with sea life. The sea itself, rendered in soothing tones of blue and green, serves as a dynamic backdrop, with its waves rhythmically supporting the nymph's form. This fusion of human and nature themes is typical of Burne-Jones's work, which often explored romantic and fantastical subjects.Overall, the soft curves of the nymph's form, the detailed rendering of the marine creatures, and the soothing color palette create a dreamlike atmosphere, inviting the viewer into a serene, mystical world beneath the waves. Burne-Jones's skillful blend of realism and fantasy in "A Sea-Nymph" provides a captivating visual exploration of mythological themes and their connection to natural beauty.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
