More about this artwork

"Fête galante by a Fountain" is an enchanting oil painting by French artist Jean-Baptiste Pater, created around the period from 1722 to 1724. This artwork beautifully exemplifies the fête galante genre, which Pater, a student of Antoine Watteau, adeptly embraced in his career. The painting portrays an idyllic, romantic scene set in a lush, verdant landscape that seems to whisper stories of gentle love and peaceful conversation. The composition delicately balances scenes of intimate encounters and playful interactions among elegantly dressed figures. To the left, a group of individuals engages in intimate conversation and music-making, suggesting a sense of communal harmony and leisure. Among them, a woman adorned in a striking red dress captures the viewer's attention, symbolizing perhaps the vibrancy and passion of the gatherings common in such pastoral settings.Moving right, the painting shows a couple, lost in their private world, sharing a tender moment. The man gazes affectionately at the woman, who, clad in a sumptuous pink and blue gown, looks back at him with equal fondness. This central pair, highlighted by the soft light that seems to halo them, conjures an aura of romantic idealism. The background is masterfully rendered with detailed trees and dappled light filtering through their leaves, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that enhances the overall theme of an earthly paradise. A statue of what possibly could be Cupid—the god of affection and love—further romanticizes the thematic tone, suggesting that this is a place where love is both celebrated and revered.

Jean-Baptiste Pater was a French rococo painter.

Born in Valenciennes, Pater was the son of sculptor Antoine Pater and studied under him before becoming a student of painter Jean-Baptiste Guide. Pater then moved to Paris, briefly becoming a pupil of Antoine Watteau in 1713. Watteau, despite treating Pater badly, had a significant influence on him. However the two quarreled and Pater returned to Valenciennes, where he remained for two years. In 1721, Pater and the dying Watteau reconciled; subsequently Pater became a student of Watteau once again, although only for a month before the latter's death. Pater later claimed to have learnt everything he knew during those few weeks with Watteau. He was accepted into the Académie in 1728, presenting a large military work in the popular Watteau style: La Rejouissance des Soldats (Louvre).
