More about this artwork

Henri van der Stok's enchanting creation, "Sterrenbeeld Maagd," beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Virgo zodiac sign through his masterful use of symbolism and natural imagery. Crafted between 1880 and 1920, this artwork is a striking example of Van der Stok's unique artistic style, characterized by meticulous detail and an engaging composition. The centerpiece of the painting is a gracefully poised, nude female figure, situated amongst a lush backdrop of flora under a starry sky. The figure, representing the zodiac sign Virgo, is delicately holding up a star, connecting it to a celestial arc that sweeps across the night canvas. This arc can be interpreted as a symbolic bridge between the earthly and the cosmic, highlighting Virgo's association with purity, fertility, and the natural cycle of growth.Around her, the natural scene is richly adorned with a variety of plants and flowers, which not only add depth and texture to the piece but also reinforce the themes of virginal purity and natural harmony that are often attributed to Virgo. This connection to the earth is further emphasized through the presence of flowing water and vibrant flora, illustrating the sign’s well-known affinity with nurturing and growth. At the base of the artwork, the word "VIRGO" is prominently displayed, framing the composition and anchoring the celestial and terrestrial elements together. The carefully chosen motifs of stars and the moon also contribute to the mystical and serene atmosphere of the artwork.Henri van der Stok’s "Sterrenbeeld Maagd" serves not just as a visual representation of the Virgo zodiac but as an invitation to contemplate the deeper connections between humanity and the wider universe.
