More about this artwork

Henri van der Stok's enigmatic 1880-1932 "Uranus" stands out as a striking piece within his oeuvre, showcasing the artist's penchant for detailed, symbolic work often steeped in astrological references. This captivating print embodying the celestial theme presents a powerful, almost otherworldly face that commands the center of the composition. Most distinctive are the bold lines and clear contrasts that define the face, giving it depth and prominence against the intricate backdrop. The artwork's design is symmetrical, instilling a balance that is overlaid with rigorous, radiating lines emanating from a central star-shaped motif on the figure's forehead - suggestive of an ethereal or divine connection. The darkness around the figure highlights its luminous elements, emphasizing motifs that might convey celestial navigation or cosmic balance.Van der Stok's use of geometric symbolism with elements such as stars, and the intricate design that appears mechanical, suggests a fusion of the mystical with the industrial, characteristic of the Art Deco movement. This blending signifies Uranus not merely as a mythological deity, but as a symbol of forward-thinking, innovation, and perhaps even upheaval, aligning with Uranus' astrological associations of change and disruption.
