More about this artwork

Henri van der Stok's "Sterrenbeeld Leeuw" captivates viewers with its bold and graphic representation of the zodiac sign Leo. Created with stark, contrasting tones, the artwork features a majestic lion roaring towards the sky, embodying the strength and regality commonly associated with this astrological symbol. The composition of the painting is dominated by the lion, positioned powerfully atop a base decorated with symbols and geometric patterns. Above the lion, the cosmos unfolds with a crescent moon, stars, and a radiant celestial body that enhances the mystic allure of the image. Notably, the piece integrates the symbol for Leo and an inscription "1.50" within the lower decorative border, suggesting a confluence of artistry and perhaps historical or postal relevance.Van der Stok's use of sharp lines and limited color palette—primarily utilizing blacks and creams—adds to the visual impact of the image, making it not only a striking depiction of the Leo zodiac but also an emblematic piece of graphic art.
