More about this artwork

Obscure and compelling, this work by Odilon Redon captures an ethereal moment where the fantastical permeates the ordinary. The painting, rendered with a mysterious gravitas that is typical of Redon's approach, depicts the surreal encounter between a woman and a large, dark bird. The bird, almost spectral in appearance, seems to be caught in the act of striking at the summit of the woman’s hair, its wings and tail fiercely spread as if in the heat of action. The woman, portrayed with a haunting, almost melancholic expression, gazes directly at the viewer, her facial features finely drawn in a manner that suggests both resignation and contemplation. The stark contrast between the bird's dynamic form and the woman's tranquil demeanor adds depth to the visual narrative, suggesting themes of intrusion, perhaps of nature or the unknown, into human thoughts and spaces.Rendered primarily in monochrome, the composition thrives on the textures created through Redon's masterful use of charcoal and lithographic techniques. This artwork, like many of his others, transcends its own imagery to evoke emotions and thoughts about the mysterious and the unseen forces of life.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
