More about this artwork

Explore the enchanting world of Odilon Redon through "Jeune Fille Et Fleurs," a mesmerizing work that beautifully showcases Redon's unique blend of mysticism and reality. This stunning piece portrays the delicate profile of a young girl, her face tranquil and introspective, juxtaposed against a vibrant explosion of floral elements and vivid colors.Redon's distinctive use of pastel and watercolor brings an ethereal quality to the depiction, where the soft hues of the girl's face contrast dramatically with the bold, almost dream-like floral patterns that seem to emerge around her like a fantastical aura. This choice of medium enhances the almost otherworldly atmosphere, hinting at the rich inner world of thoughts and emotions.Redon, known for delving into the realm of the psyche and the surreal, uses the motif of flowers to symbolize growth, beauty, and the ephemeral nature of life. In "Jeune Fille Et Fleurs", these elements combine to create a visually compelling narrative that invites viewers to reflect on the intertwining of human existence with the natural world. This piece captures more than just the image of a young girl; it embodies Redon's artistic exploration into the depths of the human soul and the complex beauty of the natural world.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
