More about this artwork

"The Last" by Modestas Malinauskas is a striking and intricate painting that captures the viewer's imagination with its rich details and surrealistic overtones. The artwork features a colossal, helicopter-like aircraft that heavily borrows architectural elements. The structure of the craft is reminiscent of a patchwork of various buildings, possibly alluding to a city or a society's collective journey or destiny. Each segment of the aircraft seems to be crafted from different architectural styles, ranging from brickwork to metallic frameworks, representing a diverse yet unified entity. The twin rotors on top suggest movement and functionality, yet there is a sense of heavy, lumbering momentum, as if the craft is both burdened by its mass and defiantly airborne. The setting, which is a vast, open field under a large, sweeping sky, further emphasizes the scale and the surreal nature of the aircraft, contrasting its complex, busy structure with the simple, serene environment. The field is dotted with spherical, yellow plants, adding a touch of color and life to the otherwise mechanical and potentially dystopian scene. The painting could be seen as a commentary on human progress or civilization - the merging of technology and habitat, the aspirations to move forward, and the sometimes chaotic amalgamation of cultures and histories that form a society. The title "The Last" hints at a final effort or journey, suggesting themes of survival, closure, or escape.

Hello, I am a Lithuanian artist Modestas Malinauskas. I was working as a fireman some time ago, now I am creating paintings.

Those paintings are born in my fantasies and dreams. Every single one has a story of its own. I always know the story, but sometimes it is not so easy to tell it in words. The easiest way for me to express it - is to paint it.

My inspiration comes from traveling and different experiences in my life. What I see and what I feel stays with me and I express it with oil on canvases.

When painting, I often use artists knife and layering techniques. My works take some time to create, because of different layers of paint. I let the first few layers dry and after that, I apply transparent overlaps of paint. The end result is what you see.

Enjoy my artworks!
