More about this artwork

Odilon Redon, a pivotal figure in the Symbolist movement, often ventured beyond the visible world into the domain of dream and fantasy in his artworks. However, in "Flowers in a Vase" circa 1910, Redon explores the vibrancy of reality through a rich composition of floral forms. In this painting, Redon exhibits a vivid collection of flowers, each bloom energetically painted with a tactile sense of detail and vibrant, lively colors that leap from the canvas. The focal point of the painting, a robust vase, harbors a lush assortment of wildflowers. The texture of the flowers is rendered with a delicate touch, showcasing Redon’s mastery over the interplay of color and light. A variety of flower types can be discerned, including daisies and poppies, each with distinct, rich hues ranging from deep reds and vivid blues to gentle whites and yellows, creating a harmonious riot of color. This artwork is not just a visual delight; it is an emotional journey as well. The wildflowers, seemingly arranged at random, evoke a sense of natural beauty untouched by human hands, almost as if Redon captured a fleeting, tranquil moment from a serene, wild garden. The textured strokes and the rustic vase further enhance the organic feel of the piece, grounding the ephemeral beauty of the flowers with earthy solidity."Flowers in a Vase" serves as a reminder of the beauty in simplicity and the profound inspiration artists like Redon find in nature.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
