More about this artwork

Odilon Redon, celebrated for his unique blend of symbolism and early impressionism, invites viewers to a serene, mystical encounter in "Évocation (Femme À La Montagne)." This enchanting work presents a woman enveloped in contemplation, set against the soft, mystical backdrop of a mountainous landscape.Redon's mastery in the use of color is evident as muted earth tones blend harmoniously with vibrant bursts of blue and yellow. The woman, depicted in profile, gazes peacefully into the distance, perhaps lost in thought or entranced by the beauty of the natural world surrounding her. The faint outlines of trees frame her, further emphasizing her connection with the environment. The ethereal quality of this painting is enhanced by the dreamy, almost shimmering application of pastel on paper, creating a texture that seems to hover between reality and imagination. Redon's art often explores themes of fantasy and the subconscious, and in this painting, the tranquil subject and subtle interplay of light and shadow invite the viewer to pause and reflect."Évocation (Femme À La Montagne)" is more than a picturesque scene; it is an invitation to explore the depths of one's own inner landscapes, resonating with the quiet power of nature and the human spirit's profound bond with it.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
