More about this artwork

Odilon Redon's lithograph 'Le Coursier' (The Race Horse), created in 1894, presents an enthralling glimpse into the artist's unique approach to both subject matter and technique. This artwork diverges significantly from Redon's more commonly recognized use of vibrant colors and dream-like scenes; instead, it harnesses the powerful simplicity of black-and-white imagery to capture the essence and dynamic spirit of a race horse. In this lithograph, Redon focuses on the muscular contours and expressiveness of a horse's head and neck, framed dramatically within the composition. The bold, sweeping strokes and deep shadows create a sense of movement and intensity, emphasizing the animal's power and grace. The use of chiaroscuro enhances the depth and sculptural quality of the horse's features, from its flared nostrils to its alert, evocative eyes.'Le Coursier' not only highlights Redon's skill in lithography but also his ability to evoke emotion and motion through minimal yet expressive lines. This piece is an exemplary showcase of his mastery in articulating the interplay between light and dark, offering viewers an arresting portrayal of majestic equine strength and beauty. This remarkable work invites admirers of art and equine enthusiasts alike to explore the depth of emotion and artistic excellence captured by Odilon Redon.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
